Second place is familiar for the WNTN Softball All*Stars. For the fifth time in eight years they were runners-up, this season losing the championship series in four games to rival McAdam Painting.
Following a terrific 14-2 regular season, NTN flew through Daddy-O and Spirits in the first two post season rounds before being halted in their attempt at a trophy repeat. The 2002 league champs suffered the loss of Mike Donley, Keith Garland and Greg Kassabian to retirement. And key players David Higgins, Dan Mikesh, Ryan Thistle, Josh Horwitz and Eddie Murray missed important games for various reasons. So with the season on the line, the team could not field its optimum lineup.
Highlights included timely hitting and dazzling fielding by Eddie Murray, Steve Freeman, Josh Horwitz, Ryan Thistle and David Higgins. Thistle impressed at third base in his rookie season and Freeman returned to the team after several years and made great contributions as a utility infielder-outfielder down the stretch. Jeff Miller pitched every inning (thought to be a team first) and finished 19-6 5.45, quite impressive for softball.
